Counseling Services at the ELC

A woman with dark hair smiles, wearing a shirt that says 'BE KIND'.Michele Woodbury is the School Counselor who supports the Early Learning Center. She received her Master's in counseling degree from Sonoma State University and has 27 years of counseling experience. She has had the pleasure of working for San Rafael City Schools for the past 18 years.

Ms. Woodbury lives in Petaluma with her family and loves the outdoors. She is passionate about working with the children, staff and community as a school counselor! She is at the Early Learning Center Tuesday and Thursday mornings (7:30 - 11:30 am).

Ms. Woodbury provides the Early Learning Center with individual, small group and classroom guidance. As the these are our youngest students in the District, she always keeps this in mind and works with them in a time span that is conducive to their attention span. She uses engaging tactics with puppets, the Kimochis and sometimes educational videos (Everyday Speech curriculum) and songs such as the Stop and Think Song [English version | Spanish version].

Curriculum

Kimochis are a kid-friendly resource for communication of students' feelings and personal experiences. In each session, students pick out the Kimochi doll that corresponds with their current feelings and discuss their choices. The large characters are used to tell stories of common experiences that we have with our feelings and how to resolve them in healthy ways.

A plush toy with a light blue body and three smaller, colorful plush figures. A poster displays colorful Kimochis characters, each representing a different emotion.

A colorful chart illustrates emotional zones: Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue, each with associated feelings. The Zones of Regulation are a resource we use to help students understand how their feelings affect their behavior and how to change their patterns to get to a "Green Zone." The concepts of the Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green zones help the students to assess their emotions and understand what can be done to help them be ready to learn and succeed.
