General Policy, Process and Transfer Information

Priority Order

Student placement is determined using the following priority order:

  1. Sibling residents (students who live in the school’s attendance area and have a sibling currently attending the school)
  2. Resident students (students who live in the school’s attendance area)
  3. Sibling intradistrict transfers (San Rafael residents who live outside the school’s attendance area but have a sibling at the requested school)
  4. Employee intradistrict transfers (students whose parent/guardian is a district employee and are San Rafael residents who live outside the school’s attendance area) 
  5. Intradistrict transfers (San Rafael residents who live outside the school’s attendance area) 
  6. Employee interdistrict transfers (students whose parent/guardian is a district employee but lives outside the district)
  7. Regular interdistrict transfers (students who live outside the district)

Note there are special circumstances in the policies that speak to the enrollment and placement of unique situations related to homeless students; victims of a violent criminal offense; transfers from a "persistently dangerous" school; victims of an act of bullying; and more.

General Timeline

Student placement and notification is determined using the following timeline:

  1. March 1: Priority deadline - Completed registration packets due to be considered for neighborhood school placement; completed intradistrict transfer application due to attend a district school outside attendance area 
  2. April 15: Notification to new attendance area residents who registered by priority deadline
  3. June 1: Notification to new intradistrict transfers and for renewal of interdistrict transfers 
  4. June 1: New interdistrict transfer deadline 
  5. June 1: Transfer lottery held if necessary 
  6. July 1: Notification to new interdistrict transfers 

Note there are additional dates related to specifics regarding intent to enroll; late applicants; renewals of transfers; lotteries; waitlists; and more.

Transfers

What is the difference between an Intradistrict transfer and an Interdistrict transfer?

  • Intra: Intradistrict transfer is a transfer from one school to another within the same school district
  • Inter: Interdistrict transfer is a transfer from one school district to another school district
     

Intradistrict Transfer

The Intradistrict Transfer Form is to be submitted by the parents/guardians of students who live within the San Rafael district boundaries and wish to attend a school other than their neighborhood school.

Interdistrict Transfer

Outgoing Applications: If you wish to apply for a transfer to a school outside of the San Rafael City School boundaries, please complete the interdistrict transfer form and send it via email to enrollment@srcs.org. Once it has been reviewed and approved it will be forwarded to the district of desired attendance.

Incoming Applications: If you reside outside of the San Rafael City School boundaries and wish to apply for a transfer please begin the process at your District of Residence. If you have any questions please contact the enrollment office at enrollment@srcs.org.
